My escort van ( N reg ) rear brakes squeal ( when i brake ) like I've just run over a small pig farm when I first go out in it...

for about the first 5 minutes you can hear me braking about a half mile away.. then the drums seem to warm up and the squealing when braking stops..

every time I take it to Kwik-Fit they say the drums are fine and that the shoes are good too..

I'm guessing that the drums are warped slightly and catch on something when cold, but straighten out and clear whatever it is once they are warm..

I'ts getting to the point that I'm going to get a brand new set of drums and shoes fitted..

Any ideas on a rough cost for both original ford and third party parts?

do you use it every day?

has it been out in wet weather?

might be rust forming on the surface of the drums. brake sharply at the end of your road and that may wear it off each day

It may nor be not that they warm up, but that the rust rubs off.

You can see the rust after rain on disk brakes more easily (esp if on alloy wheels) but drums do it too.

If you ever get the chance to leave it in a dry garage overnight you may find it doesn't happen

the wearing surface is cast iron polished to a mirror-smoothness, so any trace of rust makes a big difference.

Back brakes often have very little load unless you brake hard, so the film may not rub off unless you brake sharply. Some vans alter the front/back balance according to load carried.

Work the handbrake a few times aswell

a small stone stuck in pad can do this.
Do some hard braking 70mph to 0 reasonably briskly (dont lock the brakes up or have an accident because someone is close behind) do it 2-3 times. should get rid of any grease/ dirt in them.
Also worn or sticking calipers, incorrectly fitted pads (forgot to put in shims or retaining clips) can cause this.
