Smelly toilet with pic

Hi all,

At the bottom of my garden is a granny annex. I have recently taken the old toilet out and replaced with a new one. Since doing this it has started to smell of old poo. You can put some bleach down it and it goes away for a few days but then it comes back.
I'm pretty sure that I didn't dislodge the waste pipe under the floor because it still feels nice and solid (no pun untended).
What is the vent on the waste pipe for? Could this be the reason for the smell?

Any ideas/help would be most appreciated.

When you replaced the toilet did you also replace the pan connector?

If not check for leaks around the pan spigot
