The toilet in my ensuite (which is adjacent to the main bathroom and uses the same soil pipe and is ok) flushes ok but has an almighty stink. Sometimes a while after flushing a dark "residue" appears in the bottom of the pan. Have tried the quick flush method with many buckets of water - hot and cold but the stink remains. Have tried poking an old bit of hosepipe round the u bend but this made no difference either. Any ideas anyone please?

a dark "residue" appears in the bottom of the pan. Is that a polite term :?: Are both the toilets directly opposite each other. ie. back to back...you can get crossflow if a double branch is used. Another alternative is that sometimes the overflow pipe(s) from cistern is connected into the soil because the installer " couldn`t" route it outside. Have you got those in cistern smelly blocks :?: they can go off. Is the soil/vent pipe properly vented :?: How old`s the house,

Thanks for quick reply 1) toilets not b-t-b but side by side 2) no smelly blocks in cistern 3) overflow pipes inside cistern to run into toilet pan (or so we were told by plumber) 4) house is 15 years old but new bathrooms installed in April and only experienced probs from last week :( Also assume that soilpipe vented ok as no probs before this one. The "residue" appears even after only water has been flushed down the toilet which makes me think that there is a blockage only I can't find it

new bathrooms installed in April
You must still be under the "guarantee" of the bathroom installer. Even if no specific guarantee period was mentioned, nobody could argue for less than 1 year's cover, surely. Can you get the bathroom installer back and demand that he sort it out? It must be an installation fault.

Look at the outlet of the WC pan in question. Does it align well with the soil pipe to which it's connected, or does the WC connector fitting "offset" uphill? Is the soil pipework laid to a slight fall away from WC? Is the WC in question first or second in line with respect to soil pipe run to the vertical soil stack?

WC seems to be in alignment with soil pipe and is in the same place as the previous WC was. Soil pipework viewed from outside seems to come out fairly horizontal from both WCs with a slight drop as they join the main downpipe. They both join at the same height either side of the downpipe.

As far as stink is concerned, you probably have a poorly sealed joint or even an open connection somewhere on the soil pipework near the WC. Perhaps there is a faulty Durgo valve. You need to inspect the soil pipework carefully to try to locate problem. May have nothing to do with "dark residue" (nice phrase that).

probably in a box round the pipe
