can anyone help me please my hotpoint wm72 is 8 years old now and over the last few weeks the clothes straight after washing smell damp.

try this
packet of washing soda crystals in drum, put on 60degree wash, close door turn on, realise crystals are still in box, turn off m/c empty contents of box into m/c start again.
it sounds like something is growing in your m/c (seriously) try washing soda crystals, you could also add a big squirt of bleach, but no washing when you do this
