Smoke Detector Rage

Please help! My hard-wired smoke detector is beeping and it's driving us all nuts. I realize it's the back-up battery that needs replacing but I'm a bit hesitant to attempt this. I started by unscrewing the thing so it's now dangling from the ceiling....and still beeping of coarse. Where the heck is the battery? Do I have to unplug the thing and take it apart and if so, will that trigger an alarm of sorts?

Any guidance would be appreciated!!

(Aren't these gizmos supposed to be user friendly?!#$%)

most you should be able to see the battery when lid removed. however some have a small slide out drawer that you put the battery in then push it in yopu need to find which you have
