My daughter kicked the soap dish in her shower and it fell off the wall pretty easily. It is a 4x6 porcelain soap dish but it looks like it was attached to a metal grid that has rusted, not to the wall board itself. Tile is 4", and two tiles were cut to create a 6x4 space for the soap dish. I'm guessing the tile came in sheets on the metal mesh and they left the mesh in place where they cut out the tile to install the soap dish. The soap dish leaked and rusted the metal, which then peeled away from the adhesive on the soap dish.
I have a replacement dish, but I am trying to figure out how to prep the wall. I figure either the rust has to be stabilized or the metal has to be removed. I realize the rust probably extends into other tiles, but we need to just replace the soap dish for now.
Here is the photo. The white part in the middle completely rusted away and fell apart easily. The rest is a little more solid and definitely seems to extend under the tile.
