I'm replacing my old re-wirable fuses with mini-RCDs, and my socket circuit is on a 16amp fuse, which lends me to believe that it may be a radial.

I'm going to test this and have a spare 32 mini RCD to plug in, however I am aware that I don't know the cable size. The wiring in my house stretches over a number of years and types. Without being able to identify if all the wiring is 2.5 or 4mm is it best to assume it's not and put in a mini RCD similar to the re-wirable I've just removed?

Any help much appreciated.

I assume you mean tripswitches and not trip rcds.

Replace like for like or apply 3 step test to look for a ring.

If you can't identify all of the cables for a circuit, you can't increase the rating of the fuse/MCB.

Why are you replacing the fuses with plug in MCBs anyway?

Thanks for the replies. Yes sorry, meant plug in mini tripswitches.

Londonboy, what is the three step test? I know about testing for continuity and checking cable size, but what else is there in the test?

As flameport has noted, I can't identify all of the parts so will replace with a suitable tripswitch.

As I understand it, it's better to get rid of re-wirable fuses and replace them with trip switches. Is this not the case?

No. They won't provide any benefits other than being easier to reset than rewiring a fuse, and as fuses should only fail when there is a fault, this won't be very often (if ever)
