Could someone tell me if I can get a 4kw inverter and connect it up to a 1-2kw array of PV panels until I can afford the full 4kw array? It will give a different voltage, but at peak power might be as powerful as a 4kw at low power input?
thanks

Please get an electrician.

I would look in Yellow Pages and not attend this site if that was the case. Get off your ivory tower and say nothing if thats all you have to say.
What on earth is this forum for if you dont offer advice, just smug self-centered rubbish! (thought that was reserved for plumbers section)

If it's designed to take a solar input, a 4kW inverter will happily work with a smaller solar array. Just because 4kW is the maximum output, doesn't mean it can't produce less power. However, the output voltage will always need to be equal to or marginally higher than the grid if there's going to be any net power export. The inverter controls will take care of that.

OK - I'll say more.

The fact that you think supplying an inverter which can handle more power than the panels supplying will produce means that it will output a different voltage, and that at peak power might be as powerful as a 4kw at low power input (whatever that means), shows beyond any doubt that you have so little understanding that you should not be fiddling with this, and should get an electrician.
