I'm hoping to get solid oak flooring in my house (approx 30 sq/m) and reading up on it ,it appears I'm going to either have to glue it directly glue it to the concrete with a vapour barrier underneath or put down a 3/4inch plywood sub-floor and secret nail it to the plywood.I personally prefer the sound of the plywood sub-floor.Have any of you used or tried this method.Any advise would be much appricated.Thank's in advance.

I recently fitted my 18mm solid oak flooring just before xmas directly onto a concrete floor.
Our house is a mid 70's semi and the flooring was tiles.

We pulled the tiles up and was left with a bitumin type substance covering the concrete...we was told that this was the DPM and would be fine to lay the solid oak flooring too

This sounds like what my floor is like.I phoned up one guy and when i told him it was a concrete floor he changed instantly from saying £15sq/m to saying he need a specialist guy in to do the job for him.I tempted just to do it myself but with 3/4inch plywood.I just wanted t o see what everyone else has tried before I do it.I may see what other quotes I can get anyway.

I decided to go for 1' x 2' batton ,screw to the concrete floor and then secret nail the oak into it.The one question I have is ,I'm getting a fireplace aswell.Do I have to leave an expansion gap around the hearth or would it be better to get the hearth layed on top of the flooring?

Another question ,I bought 20mm X 400mm batons for the floor on the advise of the guy at the shop I got the flooring from.I'm now trying to find 20mm polystyrene sheets to put inbetween ,but cant find any so far ,would I get away with 25mm or am I asking for trouble?

You are I'm afraid. Using 25mm between 20mm battens and installing 'heavy' floorboards on top of it will compress the insulation only so much = wobbly floor, plus no sound insulation any more
