If some of the downstairs lights work it sounds like there's a loose connection somewhere, that buzzing sound may well indicate where that is.

If none of the lights work, then it may be a loose connection in the consumer unit, or the trip switch could be faulty.

Some careful detective work is needed. If you are not comfortable with electricity then get a spark to investigate.

As above possible loose or damaged connection, could be either a live or neutral or both. If all downstairs lights are of first place to investigate is at the consumer unit for loose/damaged live/neutral conductors. Also worth checking is that the breaker is correctly terminated to the live busbar, they can sometimes be loose or not seated correctly on the busbar, the terminal clamp could be out of position therefore will not grip the busbar.
Then next place to investigate is the very first fitting on the lighting circuit that acts as the loop. This could be at the ceiling rose or first light fitting, or it could be at the switch, depending how the circuit has been constructed.

Remember to safely isolate the parts of the installation you are working on, the live busbar will need to be isolated at either the mains switch or and RCD. The hard wiring of the circuit can be isolated at the MCB, please make assurances that you have isolated safely and proved the parts you are working on are dead! and can not be accidentally re-energised.

had the circuit breaker checked... that is ok....checked a couple of light sockets they seemed ok....... He said he would need to go around every socket individually to check them out....

He didnt have time to check them...

Just letting youse know the state of play as it stands.....

Anymore ideas to try are appreciated...
