something is clogging the drain

I have a rather unusual problem. I have had a recurring problem with what seems to be something clogging my bathroom drain in the tub. When the shower is running the water fills up the tub and when the water is shut off, the water is very slow moving down the drain. I have removed the back panel to get to the pipe and when I did, I heard a strange voice...or what sounded like a voice that said....i'm a monkey anger..... growling at me. Should I proceed or would a noose work? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
