Boiler = Baxi Sol 2 PF

Ok just returned from a 10 day holiday - left heating system on timer. Done a ton of washing (without any probs) but next day (today) noticed there's no HW or CW  and i don't know jack about plumbing :( so i'm looking for a little guidance for when i have to call a plumber in the week (like not getting ripped off)

nothing's been changed in the last 3 years at least, house (and system) is 10 years old. RAD's need bleeding fairly often (say every month) and system has made some fairly low level gushing noises for some time but everthing been working ok.

Boiler "seems" to be working ok - after "resetting" it all the led's work, system ignites and stays lit for as long as i leave either HW or CH on. I cant tell if anything at the boiler is any different than before (noise wise).

all the pipes around the tank and boiler are cold - even after the boiler has been running for like 1 hour +

it's as if no water is finding its way back from the boiler to the tank / CH system.

My big Q is does this sound like a "pump" problem or a Baxi boiler problem ?

sorry for long winded explanation - any help appreciated.

did you turn any stop cocks off before you went away?

no - sounds from your Q that i maybe should have .... but on the positive side maybe a simple job to fix.........

You said you have no hw or cw the stop cock would be the first obvious thing to check, you may have been able to do the washing because there was water in the header tank. If you still have no hw or cw, check the ball cock in the header tank, maybe its not filling. (assuming you have an open vented system)

My wife now informs me that before we went away the hot water was used up rather quickly a few times - which i guess might point to the header tank not filling up properly ??

there are two tanks up in the loft - one much smaller which looks like some sort of overflow / expansion - i can see into this easily and it has a ball cock plus some water [about a third] (should this be full or totally empty ? ) does it even have any effect ?

the larger tank is not so friggin easy to get into - the several pipes into the lid / tank are making lifting the lid about a couple of inches into a riddiculously more difficult task that what it should be ! i'll try again tomorrow (bank hol) and see how i get on

but at this rate it looks like it gonna be making a silly call out fee - thank god the immersion still lets me have HW.

THanks for the advice - any more would be great !
