Am stumped.

Reinstalled Win XP Pro after HDD fail.

MSI AGP 8X MB.

No sound/ video playback.

Installed flash and Direct X.

No video playback.

Consulted Hardware Manager. No driver for redundant modem card and no driver listed for sound.

Removed redundant modem & rebooted: have video...

Installed Realtek AC 97 & rebooted: still no sound.

Checked all the settings using troubleshooter: still no sound.

Any ideas, please?

Shall I reinstall the OS, or is that a drastic measure?

EDIT: Checked BIOS but can't see any sign of enabling the audio.

There is nothing mentioned about loading motherboard drivers.
Is there a driver package for them?
Try MSI site for driver package.

Is it onboard sound or soundcard?
Actual MSI board model may be helpful to some of the guru's

Can't seem to find a number.

It's for AMD XP2000+ processor.

The sound is onboard.

There should be a model number somewhere on the board, may be quite small. Could be located anywhere though.
Or try running msinfo32. Start->Run, type in msinfo32 then <Enter>.

A visit to the MSI site is still recommended.
They have a live update thingy which MAY work with your motherboard.

Otherwise try a search for 4in1 drivers from MSI. (i think they were called that unless i'm getting mixed up with manufacturers)
If you can't find the specific board model may be worthwhile loading up drivers for a slightly different board, some where compatible which a selection of boards, ie same driver package for various boards.

No way to know if this is the solution to the issues but worth a try.

Will try live update tonight.

Thanks.

EDIT: Yikes!

MSI Live update caused BSOD.....

Having to think again.

Got the MB now:

KT4V MS6712 Ver 1.0

But the live update recommeded has ended in a BSOD.

Am trying other updates, but so far one has crashed and the other updated, but not made any difference....

Argggh!!

try here when running
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-fixing-common-sound-problems
Also

Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.
Expand the Sound, video, and game controllers section.

3.
Right-click the sound card you want to turn on or off, and then click Enable or Disable.

AND
type services in windows search bar, open services, check that windows audi is started. if not right click and enable/start

You haven't got the mute button on the keyboard !!

No. , but good call!

Think I'm going nucking futs.....

I've looked at your link, thought I'd try the fixit. Clicked that,it said I need .NET framework 2.0 or higher. Now I've used MS Download Manager to install the software but nowhere can I find an install button like there should be......

There's an open button, but that's no good.

Am I tired??

I'll see you tomorrow....

The open button?

Just brings up a box saying that the file can't be opened, asking to choose a program to open it with.

But there should be an install button, surely, if I remember right.

When you download it click RUN and follow the screen normally.
