Hi,

We have some noisy neighbors & we wish to reduce the noise.
What are your suggestions ??
I was thinking along the lines of a Stud frame, built away from the wall (2" away) Filled with mineral wool cavity Batts, & topped off with foil backed plaster boards or even foil backed insulated boards.

The types of noise are voices, tele & music. They have made the house open plan, Wooden floors, Plaster walls , so it just acts as a Big Bass/Boom box !!
Thanks
Dean

Effective sound insulation is an expensive undertaking. The above suggestions will only partially work foil backed boards will make no difference, shelter board will deaden the noise to a degree, Two skins of 15mm accoustic plasterboard with staggered joints and accoustic insulation are thee most effective. Bear in mind that sound does not allways permeate through to your property in the ways you may consider most obvious. Much of it travels through timber joists and through voids in the floor, which may mean taking up floors and insulating theese areas also. The other obvious suggestion is one I am sure you may have already considered!!!!!!! :(

Staggered stud will make no difference in this case, as there is already an existing wall. 2" airgap is ok but 4" will be far better. 2x4's and 2 layers of 12.5mm plasterboard will sort you out, with insulation of any kind in the cavity.
Use 15mm p/board for slightly better performance, but will cost a bit more.

Do not fix the studs to the party wall in any way, shape or form, otherwise you could get flanking sound.

There is also the ceiling and floor to consider, sound can travel through these too.

If it's that loud, why not get them asbo'd?
