Hi all,
What's the easiest way to soundproof a partitioning solid wall? Would
it be a case of covering the wall with an acoustic membrane (1.2 mm) & then plastering over the top? Any other easy diy solutions?

Thanks.

Solid what?

If the wall itself can't stop the sound, then what good would 1.2mm of ANY material add to the soundproofing. Waste of money that stuff.

Best soundproofing is achieved by using 2 solid walls with a cavity in between.

Deluks,
Thanks for your reply, suppose were talking mass for reducing sound levels. The thin stuff may be OK at reducing high resonance noise levels, not low? Thought they'd be an easy answer, obviously not.

Soundproof from what - noise coming in or going out?

Density and isolation are good.

1.2mm of cloth wallpaper could have some advantages.

Google for Fermacell boards - which offer good insulation in minimal thickness

The basic problem with sound insulation is that what is good for reducing high frequency sound is not good at reducing low frequency sound. The system therefore needs to have an element of high mass and one of low mass (e.g. mineral wool or similar) and also preferably an enclosed cavity. You obviously allready have high mass in the solid wall so your next priority should be a cavity and some low mass.

If you have space a reasonable solution that would be quite effective would be a stud wall partially filled with high density mineral wool. Keep the studs off of the wall by about 20mm and double board with heavy plasterboard for the best effect - e.g. dbcheck or similar.

Woody,
Noise coming in via noisy neighbours (long story). I'll have to give it some more thought.

Jeds,
Thanks for the info. Yes it's the low moise frequency I could do with reducing. May have to try other options, have noisy tennants nextdoor. May have to approach their landlord, just didn't want the hassle, but that's life.
