Having difficulty sourcing furniture/architectural grade sheet materials (mainly ply but also looking for melamine-faced MDF) in Edinburgh.

I know big wholesale suppliers such as Latham's carry these materials but they don't sell to the public

Online retailers seem to all be based south of the border and delivery is either unrealistically expensive, or simply not available.

I've contacted local timber suppliers (only by email so far) to enquire if they would put in a special order for me but have had no positive responses.

Before I start the long slog of phoning around, does anyone know of a supplier in the area (or anywhere in the central belt) who carries sheet goods like this and who might be willing to sell and deliver quantities in the range of 15-20 sheets?

By "furniture/architectural grade" I mean stuff like Wisa/Riga birch ply, Garnica poplar ply, ash-faced ply, stuff like that.

The closest I found was a local builders yard selling no-name birch ply that, while better than the usual construction grade rubbish, was way overpriced for what it was and had clearly been sitting in a corner of their warehouse gathering dust for months if not years.

Not sure if they operate in your area but as you mentioned them, Lathams (in Leeds) are selling to me and I'm "the public".

Otherwise I've ordered some plywood (just ordinary but might be worth a look to see what they have) from Materials Market. Which turned up from a local timber merchants but at a cheaper price so clearly one of those straight drop shipping type operations.

Cheers cdbe. Oddly, Lathams website states outright "We supply products to a broad range of trade customers. Please note: due to the nature of our business and our delivery vehicles, we are unable to supply to the general public." ... perhaps it's just a tactic to deter people looking for very small quantities?

They do indeed operate up here. I'll give them a shout.

Mines a just over 1k order - I generally tell trade places that I'm starting out "in the business of property renovations" but obviously don't try to buy half a sheet of chipboard.

Seems obvious now you mention it. No business is ever going to turn down a serious order. Mine is looking like £2.5-3k at the moment.

Definitely nicking that "just starting out" tip (y)
