When I log on to the internet I get this message - " Zoom ADSL is now connected. Speed 2.3 Mbps". What does this mean please?

It means that your modem has connected to the Internet and the download speed is 2.3 Megabits per second

Or, to be picky, it's the downstream speed - the download speed is, in practical terms, quite a bit slower.

Nice to see you back on form. I was getting worried. ;)

And did you spot my pun? ;)

You may groan if you wish.

Thanks guys. Is this fast, slow or what? Does it make any diference to me or my computer?

2.3Mb/s is now commonplace; in a few months time it will be regarded as slow, but that won't change your perception of how fast it is unless you're used to something much faster, e.g. at your workplace.

The raw downstream speed is tempered by (a) local contention (with other subscribers in other households), and (b) network congestion, the latter being the effect of many people all over the world using the same network nodes (routers etc.).

Unless you perceive the connection to be slow, I wouldn't give the situation any further brain time.

Ta Softus. Actually I do regard the connection to the net as slow. So slow in fact that when I log on to the net, I go and do something else rather than hang about waiting for it to load!

Well that doesn't sound good.

If you click here, how long does it take to load the Google main page?

Also, what is the brand/model of your PC?

What's the spec. of your machine?

What anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall applications are installed?

Have you tried a disk cleanup and defrag?
