Splitting Cast Iron Rads

Dear all,
I wrote some time back about splitting the bars on Cast Iron Rads, I have finally found the tool to do it, but need some advice. I have heard that the bars are joined with reverse threaded nipples, does this simply mean to undo them, it is just a case of turning them as I would to tighten them, or is there something else involved to release the bars.
