We have just bought a 2nd hand Ercol dresser that is varnished all over. We are wanting to paint the item in a style as follows:

We are thinking of spraying it in a farrow and ball type emulsion colour, we already have a compressor and have been recommended the following spray gun:

Does anybody have and advice please on the prep of the dresser, and where would be the best place to spray it? Does it need to to be well ventilated? Could we do it in the garage or even outside?

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

When spraying it is vital to protect yourself from breathing in particles which become airborne even and especially with water based paints. There are different classes of masks and respirators, i dont spray so wouldn't advise which one so have a look for some further information.

You'll need to prime the dresser following a thorough cleaning, prime with coverstain or bin and follow with minimum two top coats, wet abrading between all coats.

As far as where to spray, your big enemy will be dust. So if you have a concrete garage floor dampen it down prior to starting spraying. Technique is important too, there are loads of videos on youtube of people spraying furniture.
I wouldn't spray in the garden as you'll be frustrated by every insect in the district getting stuck in your paint and even a light breeze will carry overspray some distance.

Viscosity is also very important, the paint needs to be thinned correctly and check that the paint you've chosen can be sprayed. Also you need to use the right tip on the gun.

Thanks a lot, have got the masks sorted and will probably go for the garage.
