Hi

I need to add a spur directly off a double socket on a 30amp ring circuit to plug in a PC, printer & flatscreen monitor. Can I use 1.0mm cable or does it need to be 2.5mm?

Also the cable will need to run outside the house as I have solid floors and there is a floor to ceiling window in the way. Instead of using armoured cable, is it ok to use plastic ducting?

Thanks
Adam

You should be using at least 2.5mm for spurs off the ring, larger sizes may be needed if thermal insulation is involved.

Plastic conduit is ok outside, get the black stuff as it is more UV resistant, solvent weld the joints and drill holes in the bottom of the lowest parts to allow any water that does get in to drain out.

How do you propose to provide sockets for 3 items?

It needs to be 2.5mm²

Round PVC conduit.

Adam do make sure your tapping off the ring at the best socket, have you checked the other side of the wall in the area you require the new position ?

It would be aesthetically far nicer, less complex and due to removing the potential of external influences (hot, cold, wet, frosty), safer- so do make sure there's no other part of the ring that the cable could run from.

If you want 3 sockets, why not fit:-

which has a 13a fuse in built.

if there really isn't a better socket, perhaps the room above the area and drop down from the ceiling edge in trunking ?

But as it is for a PC he might want to use a multi socket extension lead with surge suppression built in!
