My ground floor area is made up of half original pine boards (~100yo) at the front and half new softwood (redwood, I think) at the back. When sanded to bare wood, there is a clear difference in colour between the two, the new softwood being particularly pale. I want the entire floor area to have the same appearance - colour-wise, that is - once it has been varnished. I have already bought some varnish - Bonakemi Spectra - which is clear so, if I am going to use this, I need some sort of stain to give the floor some colour. I had a previous attempt at colouring the wood with wood dye but the two types of wood appear to absorb different amounts of dye and end up looking even more different than the bare wood. Also, I tend to find that, unless the floor is absolutely perfectly sanded, the wood dye can produce a rather blotchy finish.

How can I achieve a consistent appearance across the whole floor ?
