staining parquet flooring

Recently moved into new house which has parquet flooring in loung & hall. The previous owner had it stained professionally and it is in beautiful condition, although the colour is not good & I would like to either darken or lighten the floor.

How tricky a job is this? Any advice would be appreciated before I undertake a job that would not be able to be undone.

If the existing finish material is oil/wax you could try some coloured wax in a small area to try it out?
If it has been lacquered/varnished then I'm afraid you will have to sand it to apply a new colour.
