Staining Wooden Kitchen Worktop

can anyone help?

we have bought a Numerar worktop from Ikea and it is much lighter than we expected it to be. I was wondering how i coudl get it darker, is it okay to wood stain it with a varnish then treat with oil? or will the oil then not sink into the wood?

any help would be much appreciated

Kitchen worktops need oiling, lots. Ideally before you start using it. Do not varnish under any circumstances. The same worktop in Ikeas showroom would have been oiled already so will look darker as a result. Yours is still bare.

Can you use wood stain on the worktop and then oil lots and lots?

 

[Symptoms]

Claudine - you can stain these prior to applying a protective finish. Your choice is water-based stain or spirit-based stain in lots of colours (spirit dries quickly but is 'less forgiving' if you muff it up). Test the stain, straight out of the can, on the underside of the w/t, if too dark dilute & try again and so on 'till you get the colour you want. If you want it darker just let the first coat dry then apply additional coats until you're happy but remember the finish you apply will also darken it a bit. But remember, you're doing sample patches on the underside so it doesn't matter if some don't agree. Keep a note of mixes/dilutions, etc. for when you do it for real on the top.

Always oil these tops. Liberon Tung Oil, Chestnut Food Safe Oil or similar specialist w/top oil is what to use. Other oils may (do) have toxic additives and can honk a bit.
