i have been told by one carpet shop that underlay is a requirementfor stair carpet, even tho it is felt backed is this true

It's recommended for wear, durability, appearance retention and feel, but not essential to the physical install of the carpet.

If you do go with underlay, put something with some depth down, at least 9mm if possible, anything thinner and you could possibly argue you may as well have straight layed the feltback.

Of course, different types of underlay can again extend life of the carpet etc, depends on your budget (limited I guess if you are looking at feltback on stairs)

Plus one to crazydaze`s advice....

....if you intend to use a feltback carpet on your stairs then be aware that the looppile are more durable than the twistpile at this pricepoint.

....of course avoid looppile if you have cats!!!!!!!!!

finally you will hardly need any underlay to cover your stairpads, so it wont break the bank anyway ;)
