Stair Stringers

Hey,

Do they tend to be supported by whatever is below them, i.e. a wall, or are they self supporting?

We want to move the door under our stairs over a bit (about 320mm) and make it taller so we can make some storage using kitchen wall units (310mm deep with doors).

Top of the stairs (showing nothing substantial above it):

Current door. Will be moved closer to the photographer. The space between the architrave on the door to the right and the back wall is 310mm funnily enough!

On a straight flight, the strings will be self-supporting. Think of the staircase as a ladder laid at an angle.

assuming there is a landing to the rh side off the stairs it may rely on that wall for support

The tops of straight flights are usually supported off the trimmer in the thickness of the floor.
