I always thought the hit and miss type stairs were a modern thing. Watching HUH this morning, there is a Victorian 4 story house, where the top story is accessed via space saving hit and miss stairs - stairs where you have to go up, down, with your feet in the right sequence, deep on the left, shallow on right, followed by deep on right, shallow on left.
