Hi, I bought a new house. The stair is absolutely fine except we find the steps bit narrow and would like to make them wider about an inch. Is there any way without replacing the stair with new?

Do you mean wider or deeper? What are the current dimensions?

He says wider... but does he really mean it? :D

And what do you think the dimensions are?

I am talking about the depth of the steps. JD you are right, I mean deeper. In short, every single step 1 in deeper than what they are now.

Adding 1" thread to the risers height will give you problem at the top floor, I think the only way is to recalulate with a new stairs, are you saying the risers are too low? What are the height of the risers?

assuming you mean a a longer step to put your feet on !!!!!

you are not allowed to cover the treads with an inch deeper boards as this would be a trip hazard [in two respects]

so your talking new staircase and moving the top a foot or moving the bottom a foot with head height clearence implications and other regs infringments
so your talking £500 to £1000 as a starting cost for your inch !!!!!

But I have seen stairs where the riser is not vertical, but slopes out at the top so the treads are deeper. Perhaps only on concrete precast stairs but it should surely be possible on a wooden stairt.

yes but usualy within about 18mm equivelent to the nosing overlap

what we are talking here is an inch "beyond " the nosing plus an extra 18mm on top of the tread if we extend the tread thus the double trip hazzard ;)

JD, I liked your idea! Means, if I add a sloped wooden piece to riser (3.4mm at bottom and 20-22mm at top) would give me deeper trade.

Big-all, do you think it will cause hazard?

the way you naturaly climb steps is you lift your leg pivoting at the thigh knee and ankle your body automaticly and safely clears the front off the step

if you suddenly introduce a near 2" lip at the front edge the normal movement is liklely to catch on the lip

you should also remember comming down the stars would be more difficult !!!!

as a matter off interest what is the depth off your tread !!!!!

Currently the depth of the tread is 205mm. I would like to make it atleast 220mm, ideal will be 225mm as we are used to with this size.
Big-all, I really appreciate your consciousness for potential hazard.

just measured my steps bang in the middle :D :D :D 215mm

i would just live with them youll soon get used to them just be a little bit more carefull till you get used to them:cool:

after all if i can climb my steep terraced stairs with my size 13 [46]boots on youll get used to it :D :D :D :D ;)
