It's possible to clean the solenoid, but probably won't last too long.
Have a look on ebay for one

Sounds like the starter motor has jammed or is broken. The loud click is the solenoid activating. Replacing a starter motor, really is an easy job, as long as the so and so's at the factory haven't put it on with pentagonal bolts or some such nonsense. Remember to disconnect the battery first !

what car make/model?

some pre-engaged versions of toyotas have the capability of changing the solenoid contacts thereby saving the cost of a new complete unit. if you can, have a look at cleaning the contacts first.

I would suggest that you inspect the battery terminals and ensure that they are clean. The solenoid does not take very much power and the click which you can hear is likely to be the solenoid pulling the starter contacts together but, with a less that clean positive terminal, on the battery, the large amount of current, required by the battery, cannot flow. As someone has advised, some starters have a solenoid/switch where the starter contacts can be cleaned or replaced.

My daughters Fiesta was doing just the same last week, turned out Battery was just a little LOW. Started with jump leads.
