sorry folks if i`m posting in the wrong place,i`m new to this cyber stuff..my prob is..that i`v just bought a megan Scenic 1.6 automatic (my 1st Auto)and it came with no handbook so i`m not sure if i`m doing something wrong!Down by the gearstick theres a button with a frosty pic on it(is this a manual choke),when i start it in the morn sometimes i press it and no throttle and it starts, sometimes i dont press it ,pump the throttle and it starts, but most of the time i aint sure what to do first thing in the morn as it seems to start in differant ways,Once its warm i just turn the key nothing else and away i go.i`m confused to hell,i dont even know what the button is i cant find a pic anywere on interiour, has anyone got a clue whats makin my car start one way then another way because i sometimes end up flooding it when i`v done the same as the day before.
thanks D . ps..V reg

It is a traction control and it has no effect on starting. However, the coolant temperature sender does, and its likely to be at fault. Me and Renault auto boxes don't get on.....

You should never pump the accelerator pedal to start a modern car, it confuses the ECU and leads to flooding problems.
The mass airflow sensor, tells the ECU the quantity of fuel it needs to inject for the measured air flow, 'pumping the pedal' upsets this ratio, and will flood the engine.

Wotan and Burnerman thanks for replying, i got in the car this mornin(damp/weather) and just turned the key, after a 1 attempt it started witch made a change (i am stupid with cars esspecially automatics),the button down by the gearstick with the frost icon on it also has a pic next to it of a foot pressing ( throttle? ) pedal so does this mean it`s still to do with traction control?
Many Thanks for taking the time

The button with the frost symbol is the 'snow and ice' mode for auto transmission. when it is turned on it adjusts the gearshift points of the automatic transmission to make wheelspin in slippery conditions less likely.

The foot on pedal symbol is a reminder that there is an interlock so you can't engage a gear after starting the engine without putting your foot on the brake pedal first.

There should be no need to 'pump' the throttle to start the engine, it probably does more harm than good. Our old Renault suffered the consequences of the Tesco fuel debacle a few years ago, and needed a bit of gentle coaxing to start in cold weather. A new lambda sensor and cat eventually sorted that.... for a price!

Among the 'usual suspects' for bad starting are the crank position sensor, which may benefit from a quick clean up, and Renault ignition coil packs

Thanks everyone for your help, the motor is in the garage now waiting for a new TDC(dtc) ? from renault and they`v had to replace some other censor aswell.Bring back manual chokes anyday  .
