My central heating system is very old - the boiler itself is around 5 years old - potterton.

I think it's an open vented system - there are two tanks in the loft - one for hot water feed and one for heating feed and the actual hot water storage tank is in the bathroom.

When I put the HW on, after a few minutes, there is a banging noise in a pipe (I think it's the pipe leading up from the storage tank to the tank in the loft) and then the vent pipe over the water tank in the loft expels steam, hot water and air. This lasts for about 5-10 seconds after which all the banging and 'water expelling' stops.

The water does heat up but I have NO IDEA why this happening? Any ideas??

sounds like
1 faulty pump or
2 faulty thermostat on boiler would be the most likely place(s) to start
