My boiler seems to work fine when the weather is mild. It worked all day yesterday and came on today when asked. When it is colder I will have to press the reset button a number of times throughout the day.

It was serviced just before xmas and had a new oil pump and nozzle fitted. The burner was taken to service engineers workshop so would have been tested at room temp and therefore would not have been able to see the problem.

There is aprox 12 inches of pipe from my tank to ground which is not insulated, my neibours is. The pipe then runs underground 4m to my burner. would I need to insulate the pipe?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

More likely to be icing in the oil filter bowl at the tank outlet, if it has one of course. You need to strip it down and make sure there is no collected moisture on the filter mesh and water in the bottom of the bowl.

Insulation will help but it needs to be really really cold before the kerosene itself waxes.

Replacement of parts in a workshop is no problem as long as the burner was properly commissioned on your boiler.
Your symptoms suggest the mixture is too lean, but without being there cannot be certain. Get the man back and voice your concerns.

I am amazed that anyone would find it necessary to take this burner away for repair.
It is quite easy to strip to individual components in 5 minutes.
To remove to a workshop to replace a pump is taking the p*I$$
Obviously someone who is clueless!!

Unless they did not have the parts;
5pm trip to merchants on the way home and return the next morning before another full day.
Been there - done that

If they don't have the parts with them then it seems quite reasonable to me to take the burner away to fit and test and adjust new pump.

Still needs gas analysis when fitted to boiler though.

It's a 10 minute job to change oil pump and adjust pressure.
It has to be THE easiest burner to work on.

The only burner that I have taken away to test was a Riello Gas 3.

It had been submerged due to a flash flood and sump pump failure.

There was still 9 inches of water in the plant room.
