I've recently bought an oak veneer dining table from ebay and the surface is constantly sticky. It's worse once it's been washed (soap and water). Any ideas?
Have you been using only soap & water? Some washing up liquids leave a sticky residue & most kitchen anti-bacterial sprays will destroy even commercial quality varnish/lacquers very quickly.
toe - it sounds like the finish (varnish/lacquer) has had it. Maybe the guy you got it off on Ebay gave it a lick of some finish before he sold it to you; the stuff could have been beyond it shelf life so hasn't dried/hardened, and never will. Solution - strip it off and re-finish. See if you can discover the type of finish used - danish oil, for example, can feel sticky until it dries.
