stone floors and skirting boards?

We're doing a major refurbishment project on an 80s barn conversion.

Does anyone have an opinion about traditional flagstone flooring and skirting boards? I've scoured magazines and books and sometimes see skirting boards, sometimes just the wall.

IMHO the wall with no skirting looks best.

With no skirting, however, the walls would soon look grubby.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?
