Many years ago I had an old copper boiler which was removed , there was a wire going to it that was placed back into the roof space. I have an old heating timer (the type that goes around like a clock with small metal pegs to change heating times) which has wire going into it and the other wire is the one that isnt attached to anything and previously went to the boiler , the timer still goes round and lights up and has a small fuse socket just below it. I am a bit concerned that the wire that was going to the boiler is still live , because power is still going to this timer can I remove it , remove both wires and replace the live one and turn it into a socket? any ideas as I am a bit concered that I have a stray live wire amongst the dust and rubbish in the loft space.

Yes, if it is, as is usual, protected by a 15A fuse or 16A MCB you can replace the fused unit with a socket and remove the timer and attached cables.

Switch off the main switch and test for dead before starting the work.

When you say "boiler" do you mean "boiler" or do you mean "hot water cylinder?"
