I have just purchased a conservatory suite from ebay, originally it was an expensive suite, in the pic it looked beautiful, but when it arrived it was this vile tan colour, someone has tried to varnish it (badly) I have spent the last two days sanding it down, and it lovely underneath the yuck varnish.
Is there a way to strip the old varnish off ? would it take a paint stripper ? can i wash the cane down after it has done its job ? or will the cane warp and split with wetting it ? or maybe send it to a door stripper ? would cane take the acid dip they use, any ideas please my fingers have become raw with sanding, I'm down to raw flesh on a couple of them Grrr
Help please.

I would be interested in this as well if anybody know the answer, I have varnish on cane furniture, I was going to sand it down lightly, clean with white spirit, emulsion as a undercoat then top coat?

Hey there masona, I've just bought some paint and varnish stripper, I'm going to give it a try, will let you know how if works OK.

My wife wouldn't wait
We lightly rub it down and use aliumium paint then undercoat with a top white coat, no good if you want varnish finish though.

All done!!! I put two coats of paint stripper on te furniture as per instructions on the can, gave it a good wash with soapy water and left it to dry, at first the thin beading lifted and I thought i may have to replace them...but .... after the cane dried out fully the bead sat right back into place.
The cane has been left "nude" when i started to apply a silk colourless varnish it looked like a yellow pine again Yuck!! I took that back off, now I want to know what i can seal the wood with... and keep the natural off white colour, a wax or linseed oil maybe ??? what do you guys recommend ??
Thanks
Lynn

I like the look of this stuff, not the usual run of the mill "diy gunk".
Thanks.... very much...
