Hope this may be posted and will get some decent feedback.

Currently doing a small project in deepest wales, my client is one of the architectual team who designed the gherkin no less!!

as part of the works there is a glass landing area which is approx 1800 x 900mm which ultimately sits in a "inverted lower case t section, which is fixed back to joists , trimmers, the detail i am working to as no dimension for the bearing of the glass onto the frame, but would be in the region of 15mm if working to the sketches.

what i ask does anyone know much about structural glass in this situation, a company as specified the glass as 2 x 19mm laminated with a 1.52 PVB layer giving a thickness of 39.52mm, the glass company will not discuss the bearing needed,
anyone any ideas??

We assume you are the builder then?

So who has done the detail? The architect?

If the glass supplier is merely supplying the glass and not the support frame it sits in then a structural engineer needs to be employed who is au fait with structural glass.

Or someone (your architect) needs to take a flier on it and tell you what dimension.

If the glass suppliers are appointed to supply the supports too then it should be them.

Think weve cracked it!
Glass people are advising a 25mm rebate in the frame and the glass will need a 6mm clearance giving a bearing of 19mm on all edges, the rebate will be taken up with a 6mm rubber gasket and the glass will sit on a 3mm gasket.

Just for those who may be interested price of glass is £946.00 + Vat
