I want to insert a stud wall beneath an RSJ. How do I attached the timber plate to the RSJ? I understand the beam has to be clad in plasterboard to conform to fire regulations so it would make sense to attach the timber before this happens. I have been advised to bond the plate to the RSJ with Gripfill which will do the job apparently, but the end of the sud wall will also need to support a fairly hefty door so I am worried it won't be stong enough. Any suggestions?

Just use coach bolts, at approx 600 cts, Drill the timber offer it up then just drill throught the rsj.

Yes, with a good quality drill bit, about 5mm to start, the go through with a 10/12mm.

An alternative would be to hire a magnetic-base drilling (sometimes called milling) machine. They can be used upside down as the base is magnetic (you must strap them on with a chain for safety too) and they would make light work of your rsj's. Just a question of cost really.
