Stump grinder question

use them all the time, and yes it should work like that. If the teeth are blunt it you will be there all day. Just run your finger on the edge of the teeth (not when its going!) nd youll be able to feel if they are rounded down. SHould do a stump like that very quickly

Try Travis perkins if you have one in your area for a quote(or indeed any other builders merchants with tool hire facilities). That HSS price is not of this planet. I agree with what thermo is a saying regarding sharpness of tooth but there is also the type of tree stump you are grinding. Some tree types disappear beneath the grinding wheel very fast while others are literally a grind.

Thanks guys.

Well that was my weekend wasted. There blunt as can be :( The stumps are leylandi and range from 4" to 18". If this one had decent teeth, would it still be up to it?

I've got my fence going up next weekend and need them down before then. Might have to take a day off work during the week, but hey-ho, if the suns out, that'll be a bonus

Any ideas as to somewhere close to Reading where I can get a decent one from if HSS don't play ball tomorrow?

it should go through a leylandii in no time. we always specify sharp or a new set of teeth when we hire them and refuse to pay if it turns up blunt. Tell HSS. They proabably slap a wear charge on as well.

most hire places will do stump grinders

Thanks :)

I've had another one turn up today that seems more up to the job than the last one. Fingers crossed it does the job more effectively this time

I feel a robot wars moment coming on...

what's wrong with drilling an inch hole with and auger and filling it with anfo?
it's what my cousins husband does on his farm...

That's not really an option  I don't think the neighbours would like that idea. As it goes, one of them has asked why it was taking so long to cut my grass.

Imagine if she heard something like this:-

She'd drop her breakfast on the spot

18 more to go, which isn't bad out of 41  Leylandi will never be grown in my garden!

How deep do these grinders go? Never used one, as I tend to get the digger out and rip them out, thereby creating space where plants can grow instead of a rotting mass of tap root.

When i used one i was getting subsurface approx 4", could get to 6" i suppose if you wanted to take the extra time.

with a bit of practice you can get them down to about 12 - 18 inches.
