support of internal chimney stack

Hello all. looking at increasing builders opening. I am happy about fitting a lintel at the the front, but the width of the opening would mean removing some of the cheeks on the inside of the opening. My concern is with regard to how much support these give to the internal stack, or is this bonded to the front and rear walls of the chimney?
