For a large bay window, I want to fit pull-cords in place of the really awkward bent poles currently fitted.

Bay has 3 sides each ~1.25m, the bay depth is 90cm and the drop is about 2.5m (8 foot) so these are big, heavy curtains.

Swish seem to be the go-to brand and apparently I've got free choice between:
  1. Supreme: Aluminium, DIY pre-bend then fit them
  2. Superluxe: PVC, bend as you fit
Both have the same rated weight 13.6Kg and I'm told it's personal choice which to get. I will aim to have my handyman fit them so I'm not concerned about pre-bending being a bit more tricky. But is there any real difference in quality or functionality?

If the window is south facing and gets a lot of sunshine then go for aluminium. When exposed to strong sunlight PVC can and often does become brittle after a few years,

I'd never considered that but they do indeed get the full sun in summer mornings.

I had never considered that either. That said, surely curtain rails are seldom ever in direct sunlight? They tend to be on or above the upper window trim/architrave.

As a decorator, I am used to the pvc curtain hooks snapping but I have never seen a PVC rail fail. And don't the Swish aluminium rails use PVC hooks/hangers?

Granted, the more expensive rails seem to use metal "hooks" with nylon gliders on metal rails.

Sorry, not pooh poohing your advice. I have just never encountered the problems you seem to have.
