I have just moved into a flat that has switchmaster 400 timer for the heating and no instructions. The timer has four pegs (2 black/brown and 2 orange). Now I know that they must be for on and off but I can't work out which colour does which. Also, I assume that the operate in the pushed in position??

Oranges = ON
Brown = OFF.
If you have the pegs out they will be ignored by the clock, so you could have it on once a day if you required.
They are also numbered 1 - 4 I think.

you can probably get the manufacturer to post you the instructions.

Confusingly, Switchmaster is a brand owned by Drayton, which is part of Invensys Controls. The 400 is part of the 800 range. They call it the Switchmaster SM400. IIRC it plugs onto a standard Drayton backplate so you can fit pretty well any Drayton or ACL programmer, mechanical or electronic, if yours ever goes wrong. They will send you a conversion list which is usually included with the installation instructions. However the mechanical clock ones are far easier to understand and to set or change

Drayton are quite good at sending leaflets. The instructions might be online somewhere, have a look.
