tap constantly running

please help???!!

our cold water tap will not turn off and is just constantly now running on full blast. It will not turn off as the tap just keeps twisting round and round??!
i have had to resort turning off from main when not needing to use water in my flat!! funny thing is the stop clock is downstairs under the building and i live on the first floor!!! please help urgent!!! cheers

What type of tap is it?

If it looks like this...

...then lever off the centre cap and make sure that the screw is done up (handle could be slipping).

If the screw is tight then you will need to strip the tap and make sure that there is nothig caught under the washer, then change the washer.

Whilst the cap is off you can turn the tap off with a pair of pliers.

Hi,

I have the same problem and the screw is tight so therefore. I have taken apart the tap and need to work out what to do next. The washer looks fine and the seat does too. Any ideas?
