Hello, I wanted to thank everyone for the help over the years as you helped out with numerous plumbing problems.

I have a similar issue like this post:
//www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=112746

We moved into a 1930's apartment building and when the steam heat is on at night there is a ticking in the wall that happens at irregular speed. It wakes us up 2-3 times a night as its right on the bedroom wall.

I understand that this might be expansion of pipes, or rubbing on a support.

This is happening around the ceiling of the 4th floor of a 6 story building. Besides a pipe support, can it be a heat trap, or a heater bypass? Im not too familiar with how the steam pipes are set up in these old buildings.

Whatever the issue might be, do you think its the buildings responsibility to fix it? (this is a condo I purchased)

Thank you kindly,
fixing this will help our family get some sleep.

This is a UK-based forum and no-one uses steam heating in this country.

I'd suggest that you try on here;

The Wall is a US-based forum and the regulars know everything you could want to know about steam heating.

Yes youre quite right! I didnt think that steam heat is abolished in UK! Congrats on that... not a big fan of it... but Americans tend not to upgrade very often although there are more economical forms in existence... lets not get into that now. Thanks again.

Since the OP had asked specifically about domestic space heating, I gave a brief answer accordingly. He found the answer adequate without my specifying that it excluded steam process heating. If he'd asked about steam traps for his autoclave, I'd have said something else.

You seem to be the only person who had a problem with misinterpreting that answer; that was probably because you were ignorant of the use of LP steam boilers for domestic space heating outside the UK.
