When refitting a tap to a basin what sealant should I use?

The previous one has a large core of white sealant. Then a white washer and metal washer.

I used plumbers mait ? H

Ideally you don't use any, any sealant may let the tap to move around when tightening and allow the seal to be pushed out.

They're called split klick centering washers - available at most merchants

There used to be an Essex Brand centralising tap washer

Deleted as it related to the basin waste and not taps.

Should not be a need for sealant. That said the washer provided for the underside of the basin is often too small to make a good seal for water coming from the basin overflow.

The basin waste does not leak when there is water in the basin but does leak if water is going into the overflow.

My solution is to cut a larger washer out of medium soft rubber sheet to get a good seal between the underside of the basin and the plastic nut.

Taps Bernie. Not wastes.

Given the fact that this thread is about taps and not basin wastes o_O

The only addition to that waste idea is that the water can also run down the threads, if the supplied seal doesn't seal tight to them, ergo using a basin mate. They're tight enough where they almost screw up onto the basin waste taking up the gap in the threads or alternatively using a little silicone into the gap between the waste shank and the basin waste hole to seal it up.
