Morning all

I'm about to replace a single built under oven with a double. I was surprised to find the current single oven is plugged into the mains rather than its own circuit from the consumer unit.

The new oven is rated at 4500w and 32a, and I'm guessing that even if I only used it as a single oven temporarily (a couple of weeks) it's still not a good idea to wire it into the mains plug like the single oven that's fitted right now? Or will the new ovens 32a power supply draw too much juice regardless of how I use the oven?

I have spare slots on the consumer unit for a dedicated supply, I just doubt I'll get an electritian with availability this side of Christmas.

If the socket is on a ring final protected by a 32a mcb or rcbo then you could change the existing socket to a cooker connection unit and wire the oven to it

Good suggestion, but as far as I can tell it's not. I don't think it's worth risking at this point, even if I only use the oven with kid gloves for a week or two.

I'm saying if the instructions say its needs a 32a supply then it can go on a circuit that's rated at 32a, especially as a temporary fit.

I think the op has shown enough understanding so far to not have everything on that circuit running all at once.

yes, you can use it via a plug, if you are only using one oven. It will only draw what you turn on.
This is probably the easiest and quickest thing for the OP to do this side of xmas.

You may want to try and get some heat resistant flex, for use now and when it's correctly installed

Thanks all.

I think I might have talked myself out of it for now, although I should have an electrician coming to have a quick look at it tomorrow.

No, there is no cooker circuit on the CU, the old single oven is just plugged into the mains right now.

And no, I wouldn't use both ovens at once on a temp connection.

My fault for not checking before I ordered the new oven. I just assumed there would be a suitable cooker connection there.
