Hi, I wonder whether anyone is able to give background to this tool and, importantly, help me ascertain what it was used for?

It is 39" long, weighs about 11.5lbs, with 2 handles at either end, one which screws to open and close the central jaws. There are 2 jaws and each has a central slot opening to a circular cut-out, with 'OUT' marked above. The back of each jaw has what looks like a v-shaped vice jaw.

The ID stampings are 'THE BORDEN CO, WARREN, O, MADE IN US' and the logo of a beaver with 'BEAVER NO.5'.

My guess, and it is only a guess (!), is that it was use to wrap steel cable armouring around a central core. Can anyone help with its purpose?

Peely - it's a pipe cutter. Those 'central jaws' are infact the cutting heads. Look carefully at these heads and you'll notice that there's a cutting tip at one side of central slot, the other side is ground to form a clearance (essential for an effective cutting action). Borden's manufactured a whole range of pipe working equipment.

Hi thanks for your post. Interesting as I discounted pipe-cutter because of the configuration of the blades...at right angles to what would be the cutting surface. Your detailed response makes perfect sense...thank you.
