Maybe you're going to the wrong places, B.O.B. I've never ever had a place charge me for a retest, whether I've done the work or had them do it. Most think of the first one more as a pre-MOT check to give you a list of things to do....

Hasn't the MOT now gone computerised this last year, so only if the vehicle is repaired the same day is the retest free? Mine failed on a wiper blade and I wasn't charged for the retest, although I know of a few people with cars with worse problems which have taken a couple of days to sort and they have been charged for it.

Dunno'

Will report bak on March 17th. Bugger - That's only next week !!!

Don't think I ever paid for a re-test apart from once when I didn't return for about 3 weeks.

its down to the testers m8 they can do the mot and not recharge you for it

gas fitters pay 2.50 to notify online i bet its cheaper for mots so they cant really justify there full fee

go somewhere else and ask first if they rob u twice:cool:

WOAH!!! the rules are clear (though i havent read for a bit) they retested mine for free. THEY HAVE TO DO THIS. They cannot charge for a retest if they did the work to correct the faults. And IIRC, if you return the same day, having had the faults corrected elsewhere, you do not have to pay either. cool eh.

and bob, you're being ripped off mate. £45 for an MOT????? most places round here will do it for £20-25. roll-in, roll-out style. Bit that takes the longest is emmisions. All the rest, there is 2 guys. one outside checking lights, steering etc and one inside operating controls. Takes 5-10 mins a time, if that. whil-u-wait

With computerised MOT's I think they have to take approx 30 mins. To do a proper test I think 10mins on a rotten old Fiesta/Nova/Corsa (chav wagons) is not long enough, but a fairly new car then 10-20 mins may be possible.
A few years ago I took an old Hillam Imp for it's test for a customer and it failed (rust(lots)). I told the chap to scrap it, he agreed and took it away. 14 weeks later he came to see me and asked if I would repair his car, in a moment of weakness (having a quite week) I said yes. When I took the car for a test I expected to pay for a new test, but the test centre asked me what it failed on, after telling them they checked the work I had done and passed the car. Best of all no retest fee.
PS don't ask me for the name of the test centre.

I always used to go to a Mot station that doesnt do repairs , an you shouldnt be charged for a retest , if you go back to the same station within 24 hrs they have too retest for free ..

Suppose you got to weigh up the pros and cons. My Bora failed on the exhaust - Flexi pipe joint had come away. They quoted me over £400 for the parts so I said sod it and ordered the parts from Bosal and did it myself. Only problem was I was charged for a re-test as I had the car away for over 24 hours. Still saved money.

Did not help that VW put a one piece front pipe and cat in one meaning you have to buy the cat if your front pipe is fudged.

bleedin 'ell, are those prices charged by everyone? Last time i had my old car tested (about a year ago) it cost £25. Computer printout and everything. £40 odd for a 10 minute test is just silly. another tax.
