The water cylinder is being mysterious

I live alone and not used any hot water in my flat for about 2 weeks due to staying elsewhere for personal reasons.

I came home the other day and hopped in the shower and no hot water. I have an electric only flat with a hot water cylinder.

I checked fuse etc and that was okay. Waited to see if I could hear it heating up overnight and no joy. When it heats up it normally makes a noise like a kettle bubbling. No noise; however today i decided to try running the hot tap in the bathroom for 20 minutes and during that whole time the water cylinder started to make the heating up noise, and then when I turned tap off the noise stopped.

I’m finding this so frustrating and wondered what this could mean

Am I using the hot water too infrequently? Have I broken the cylinder by doing this? I must admit I only use cold water to brush teeth and I tend to wash hands in cold water in the bathroom and kitchen. The only hot water i use is in the shower (apart from 2 weeks not being home recently) but I guess with the recent heatwave I was having fairly colder showers prior to going away

Any help will be amazing thank you

Thank you Andy, I checked fuse box and all looks okay. I haven’t a clue about immersions, no idea what to look for etc. It’s so annoying as running the bathroom tap makes it kick into gear but off course that setup wouldn’t be practical etc

I’m having to go away again tomorrow and I’m worried about leaving it like that as I’ve heard of something called legionnaires and that’s a nuisance

Does your HW cylinder have a reset switch? We're having a similar issue with our megaflo and (whilst we wait for our electrician to come back from holiday) it's a lot of resetting.

Regards

Great question, so sorry you are having issues too. It’s annoying isnt it?! Would you know where a reset button would be on a water cylinder please?

It looks like it is called a vented cylinder.

Immersion heaters have a rod stat.
These usually have an overheat stat on them and can be reset. Tiny little button on the rod stat head but you have to access it by switching off power and removing the immersion heater cap/cover.

I don't see any immersion heater in your pic. Are you sure your shower draws hot water from that tank and isn't an instant-heat type?

Aww I really wish it was an instant heat up set-up. I have this off-peak setup instead which has been good enough till now. I could never have a long shower as the hot water would run out, so I learnt to be super speedy since moving to this place. Now I have no water water at all. It’s so bizarre

Oh cool thank you for the clarification this is really useful for me to know

I’m not able to move the stuff out the way due to my disability flaring up so this is the best photo I can take. I think he looks smart
