Thermador Dishwasher dw246 won't get hot,very long cycle

Our thermador dishwasher has never reached a proper temperature and never builds up steam - cycles run for hours -even the light wash seems to take 2-1/2 hours. Is this just a poor dishwasher?

The heater element probably needs replacing.
