Thermostat And TRV Locations.

Hi Guys,

About to change to a Nest thermostat.
At present, I have three room down stairs, living room, kitchen and down stairs toilet.

• Living room has two large radiators and no TRV. Thermostat is in living room
• Kitchen has one large radiator, no TRV.
• Toilet has small radiator, no TRV

Then,

• Hall way / stairs / Landing, one small radiator bottom of stairs, no TRV,

Up Stairs:

• Main bathroom, one raditaor and TRV (Turned off as very rarely used)
• Back bedroom, one radiator and TRV (Turned off as very rarely used)
• Spare boxm room, one radiator and TRV (Turned off as very rarely used)
• Main bedroom, one radiator and TRV
  
• On Suit, one radiator no TRV.

At present, the heat in the livingroom gets to say 21 degrees and then the heating turns off, the rest of the used rooms are not hot enough.

From the above, what changes to TRV's and / or Thermostat location, would you change?

Put the heating on full and close all the doors. The go in each room and set a temp on the TRV . Let it settle and then check again. If the room is a good temp and the rad is off or only warm with the boiler running then that room is Set. Once all the rooms are set you can try and balance all that with the room where the thermostat sits. You may have to slow the hot water down to the room where the stat is to stop it heating up to quickly before all the other rooms

Hi,

None of the downstairs have TRV's so the the heating on full will just heat up until the living room gets to the temp set on the thermostat?
Thats the issue as I the rooms with TRV's never get warm as the livingroom gets to temp first and turns the heating off.

you may have to slow the hot water down to the room where the stat is to stop it heating up to quickly before all the other room

So I need to fit TRV in livingroom to slow the flow???

Along with proper balancing, I'd be more inclined to move the thermostat.

Is there any other heat source in the living room?

I do have a wood burner in the livingroom but this isnt being used at the moment. No other heat sources

No, you use the lockshield valve.

There should be articles on "radiator balancing" in the Plumbing FAQ's

Or you could choose the Honeywell evohome instead of the nest and then you can get individual room temperatures with their automatic TRV's. But will be a little pricier than the nest overall, but you get far better comfort/control.
